### What it is
Generative NFT is the automated process of making an NFT with maths, codes, logic, randomization, and other algorithmic elements on already created digital art.


### How it's done
A defined structure for the NFT is created and made the center of randomization, a defined structure like the body of an Ape, Alien, etc. then the accessories or variations of that NFT character like the color of the skin, the scarf, ears, jewelry, cigarettes, clothing, etc with their colors randomized using code, that's how come these 10,000, 8,888, 5,000, 250 closely related NFTs get created.


### Why it's used?
1. It’s easier (honestly you can just go on youtube and search "Generative Art")
2. The NFTs appear visually appealing void of mistakes.
3. It's accurate
4. It's cheaper (cause it makes more sense to hire one digital artist to create a couple of digital characters and then randomize their variations to generate 1,000 unique NFTs THAN hiring 100 artists to create 10 artwork each).


### When it's used
It's used when an NFT collection has a central theme based on fiction, subject to the imagination of the artists or its community. For example, did you ever think Apes could get bored? Or aliens could be lonely? Or Apes could be mutants ....lol...

## WHAT IS NON-GENERATIVE NFT COLLECTION?
Non-Generative NFT Collection is the creation of an NFT collection with manual applications of maths, logic, randomization to digitally created items but...... without code - Ouch!

## The Non-Generative Method
Unlike the automated process of creating generative NFTs, the Non-Generative process is manual and it is used for NFTs that mirror a real-life representation of sensitive sentimental values, like cultural representation. Every tribe is distinct, even if they might have similar rites and traditions, but you'd agree that no 2 tribes in this world are exactly alike in appearance, rites traditions, etc.

Now imagine *(the imaginoooooor..lol..)* that you wanted to create a collection representing 50 different tribes of Africa, It would be remiss to use a generative NFT style of creating one defined structure and then randomizing the traditional accessories of different tribes for one character and calling that character the name of an actual tribe.

It would quite frankly be an insult to the tribe.

### For example
Imagine that in the process of randomizing with code, the computer gives a character you tag the "Igbo Man" in Nigeria the "Kente cloth" of "Ewe" tribe from Togo or Ghana, that'd be totally remiss.

If the collection was about only the Igbo tribe or Ewe tribe, then some randomization by the computer can be applied but not with a collection with distinct characters representing real-life elements and not based on fiction.

1. Determine the real-life representation; for the Beningin Collectibles, we're basing it on actual tribes in Africa.

## Funding your Wallet 
To mint NFTs your digital asset needs to be connected to a token that’s stored on the blockchain, to perform the process of minting certain fees are paid to the miners or validators on such blockchain to prevent spam transactions, so it's imperative you have a minimum amount of the coin for the blockchain you are minting your NFTs on.


## Setting Up

Let’s see what is non-fungible token (NFT) is and what problem it is capable of solving
with digital art for once and all.

### About NFTs
A digital asset that reflects real-world elements like art, music, in-game goods, and
movies is known as an NFT. They are bought and traded online, often using
cryptocurrency, and they are usually encoded with the same software as many other
cryptos.

HOW TO FLIP NFTS by SUCRE

I have picked a simple example contract which can be found on the OpenZeppelin website [(here) ](https://docs.openzeppelin.com/contracts/4.x/erc721 ) 

and modified it a little bit for everyone to understand better.

ERC721 is the standard used for representing the ownership of Non-Fungible Tokens, where each of these is unique in nature. There are a number of functionalities offered by this standard and hence, it is split into multiple tokens.

[Here](https://docs.openzeppelin.com/contracts/4.x/api/token/erc721#IERC721Receiver-onERC721Received-address-address-uint256-bytes-) is more information about the ERC721 related contracts and their associated functions.
In order to simplify all the complexities mentioned in the above functions, let me simplify the process of creating and deploying NFTs for sale. The following steps give you a brief yet clear idea of how NFTs are created and put up for sale:

**Step 1:** The NFT creator/owner needs to deploy an ERC721 or any other NFT standard contract on the blockchain of their choice(Ethereum/Harmony etc.) by providing a "name" and "symbol" for their NFT. This contract is not a piece of art/collectible in itself. It is more of a first step to ensure that the ownership of the art/collectibles can be recorded and verified on the blockchain.

**Step 2:** The next step is to "mint" the piece of art/collectible. They are minted in the form of tokens using the mint() function present in the ERC721 contract. These minted tokens now become associated with the NFT contract that you deployed in step1.

**Step 3:** Once the art/collectibles have been minted, they can be put up for sale by writing your own sale contract or using platforms that have already built the underlying infrastructure.

The nature and usage of the NFT items depend on how you have coded the contracts. From the ERC721 solidity contract, many functions can be overridden and changed according to your logic/preference in your smart contract.
Here is a simple contract where we mint some tokens in a game and give it to a player in the form of an award:

**The name of the contract: GameItem**

***function _baseURI():*** This is a function that has been overridden from the ERC721 contract to set the base URI of the location of your token.

***function tokenURI():*** This function(again overridden from the ERC721) is used to return the URI of your token. We will be setting the URI in our awardItem function.

***function awardItem():*** This function takes in the address of the player to be rewarded with the collectible as well as details about the collectible. This function returns the tokenId once created.

***The _mint function*** is used to create a new token(newItemId) and award it to the address mentioned(player).

The Tech Behind NFTs

*In this section, Latsan explains what NFTs are from his perspective as an artist. He goes further into the history of NFTs, giving us an insight into how it all started.*


### INTRODUCTION
NFTs represents a unique item as opposed to fungible tokens like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which are mutually interchangeable. NFTs issued on the Ethereum Network as ERC 721 tokens are used to create verifiable digital ownership and scarcity.

Each NFT represents a one-of-a-kind item or a unique number of limited editions of an individual item. NFTs can establish scarcity for collectibles of almost any kind, including digital artwork, music, poetry, video, a book, or even a Tweet.

```The digital tokens can be thought of as certificates of ownership for virtual or physical assets. ```

NFTs can give a person proof of ownership i.e they can monetize the right to own it however, since the internet is so porous, owning an NFT doesn’t necessarily mean the person has exclusive rights because anything digital can be duplicated endlessly, but NFT of the same physical features e.g the same appearance might vary widely from price i.e $100 to $20,000 and they are of the same type but they are of different rarity, the rarity scores are different, the rarity of an asset is the rarity of its rarest properties.

If two assets share the same rarest property, then we compare their second-rarest property. The same goes for 3rd, 4, etc.

If you traded it for a different card, you’d have something completely different. NFTs can really be anything digital (such as drawings, music, or even your brain downloaded and turned into an AI), but a lot of the current excitement is around using the tech to sell digital art. 

With money, you can swap a $20 note for two $10 notes and it will have the same value. However, if something is non-fungible, it is impossible to interchange them, even if you were using the barter system, these assets have unique properties so they cannot be interchanged with something else It could be a house or a painting or an artist.

NFTs are "one-of-a-kind" assets in the digital world that can be bought or sold like any other piece of property, but they have no tangible form.

A real-life asset is valued based on its worth in the market. The price of land for instance will be determined by the location, size, and other factors. When it comes to NFTs, the value just like art is subject to the creator and the buyer. A musical artist can tokenize his album into NFTs. The fans would buy regardless of the price attached. If such an artist goes mainstream and the album becomes a success, the tokenized album will increase in price.

## **HISTORY OF NFTs**

It all started with colored coins. The first decentralized cryptocurrency was BTC, but it was a fungible one. People then began to find ways in which they could transfer assets. The first attempt was with colored coins in 2012. Colored Coins are made of small denominations of a bitcoin and can be as small as a single satoshi, the smallest unit of a bitcoin. Colored Coins can be used to represent a multitude of assets and have multiple use cases, including the following: 

1. Property
2. Coupons
3. Ability to issue your own cryptocurrency
4. Issue shares of a company
5. Subscriptions 
6. Access tokens
7. Digital collectibles

Colored coins brought about a huge leap for Bitcoin’s capabilities. Their downside though was that they could only represent certain values if everyone agreed on their worth. For instance, if 20 people agreed that 5,000 colored coins represented 5,000 coupons, and one person decides it no longer equates, the whole system falls apart. Colored Coins’ flaws are apparent; the system worked best in a "permissioned" environment which means in some instances, it’s better to simply use a database.

Nonetheless, Colored Coins opened the door to Blockchain Enthusiasts to further experiment with NFTs and this laid much of the groundwork for NFTs. The immense potential of putting real-world assets onto distributed ledgers was clear, but implementation required a more malleable blockchain.

In 2014, Robert Dermody, Adam Krellenstein, and Evan Wagner founded Counterparty, a peer-to-peer financial platform. An open-source Internet protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain counterparty that allowed asset creation. It also had a decentralized exchange and a crypto token with the ticker XCP. It had numerous projects and assets, including a trading card game and meme trading. 

NFT Collectibles, the foremost example of NFTs emerged with the development of Cryptokitties, which are online collectibles. Cryptokitties were the first set of NFTs on the Ethereum chain.

Interestingly, Cryptokitties became so popular in 2017 that they congested the Ethereum network. They are basically digital kittens with distinct traits that make them popular and favorable than others. Cryptokitties are one of the striking additions to the non-fungible tokens list in the category of digital collectibles.

And from there we had Crypto Punks and other NFTs.


## Features of NFTs

The value of NFTs comes from their scarcity. NFT developers can create an unlimited volume of non-fungible tokens; they often modify the tokens to increase interest.

Indivisible: Most NFTs are indivisible into smaller units. You buy the complete cost of a digital item or buy no item.

Uniqueness: NFTs have a strong information tab that explains their uniqueness, this is what most of us know as the MetaData.

Authenticity: This refers to the important addition among NFT characteristics that ensure how unique the NFTs are. NFTs provide representation for real-world assets, and it is important to have authentic NFTs.

Digital Wallet: As you know, NFTs are created and associated with specific blockchain accounts. You have NFTs basically on blockchain networks, and it is important to note the value of transparency in NFT features. Public distributed ledgers or blockchain technologies are immutable and decentralized in nature

Rarity: The final and most crucial feature mentioned of non-fungible tokens is the scarcity or rarity of NFTs. Rarity is actually one of the basic tenets driving the value of NFTs. Therefore, NFT creators could develop many NFTs, albeit with a certain limit to ensure scarcity.


## Types of NFTs

The ERC 721 & ERC 1155 are the two popular types of NFTs standards. 

The ERC-721 was created by William Entriken, Dieter Shirley, Jacob Evans, and Natassia Sachs in 2018.

The ERC-721 NFTs standard implements an API for tokens within smart contracts. It is written in solidity language on the Ethereum blockchain and it allows developers to tokenize the ownership of any arbitrary data. The standard aim is to create interchangeable tokens.

The OPEN ZEPPELIN is an example of an ERC-721 contact that allows developers to track items in their game. The ERC721 introduces a standard for NFTs. This type of token is unique and can have a completely different value to another token from the same smart contract due to its age, rarity, etc. 

It allows
- Transferring tokens from one account to another.
- Getting the current token balance of an account.
- Reaching the owner of a specific token.
- Confirming the total supply of tokens available on the network.
- Approving the number of tokens that can be moved from an account to a third-party account.

Like the standard ERC-721, ERC-1155 is a basic formulation designed to create useful tokens that make life easier for developers, while offering them a powerful and dynamic tool to work with.

The ERC-1155 token is a type of standard token that has the ability to store tokens that can act as if they were ERC-20 or ERC-721 or as both at the same time using the same address, under its control.

The ERC-1155 token can perform the same functions as an ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens, and even both at the same time, thereby improving the functionality of both standards, making it more efficient, and correcting obvious implementation errors on the ERC-20 and ERC-721 standards.


## WHAT IS GENERATIVE ART?

**NFT CODE GENERATIVE ART** 

A Code Art is any art that is created with code. There are numerous examples on CodePen. Generative art draws inspiration from modern art especially pop art, which uses orderly geometric patterns. It is a very broad and rich category of art created with code using a central characteristic. Generative art incorporates a self-governed or autonomous system in some way. When incorporated into a piece of code art, you get a unique piece of art each time you run your scripts, load a page, or respond to user interaction. There are also more orderly autonomous systems.

An example is Mandelbrot’s Fractal, which was derived from a seemingly simple equation. With an autonomous system, the artist gives up control over, and the computer is doing it for them. A more nuanced perspective emerges when a new creative process is considered. The coder-artist engages in a feedback loop where they are constantly tweaking a system to produce more desirable and often more surprising results. This process embraces experimentation and happy accidents in a way that reshapes the role of the artist. Generative artists use the code basics like loops, control flow, and specialized functions, blended with often unpredictable forces, to produce completely unique results unlike anything else that exists. 


## **WHY ARE NFTs IMPORTANT TO CREATORS?**

Non-Fungibility is important for creators/brands. 

Many creators do not get enough value for their artworks in terms of credit and royalties. Non-fungibility will help creators get credit for their works as the transfer of ownership of NFTs does not imply copyright. The creator has the copyright and in terms of royalties, in the traditional art system, once the artwork is purchased, the creator gets paid and that's all. But with NFTs, the creator earns a percentage on every purchase those earnings are called - Royalties.


## **CONCLUSION**

The opportunities in NFTs are boundless, if you’re already here, then you’re on the right track to being a part of one of the biggest innovations in technology.

I really don’t like the word _“Flipping”_, it kind of makes you think it’s very easy to just identify NFTs and sell them for profits.

You just don’t Flip NFTs, it takes a lot of work and patience.

The thing is NFTs these days have to do with hype and utility. 

I have had some NFTs since 2017 and they began to gain traction in 2021, that’s a long time if I weren’t patient.

Flipping NFTs takes time, patience, and knowledge.

## .
What I look for in buying NFTs, is the **hype and utility**, I don’t just buy any kind of NFT and believe it will be flipped for profits, I look for hype, which social media personality is hyping it and while doing this, it is good to understand that whatever you invest might end up as a waste, because you aren’t assured someone is going to bid for your NFT and buy them in the secondary markets.

This is because NFTs are Non-fungible, there is no price pegged to it like fungible assets. It is people that attach value to these NFTs actually. Sometimes, even amongst a particular collectible set of NFT, you’ll see some rare ones sometimes sell at a cheaper price than the common ones, that’s because someone might attach a sentimental value to a common rarity and value it at a higher price than a rare one.


## **HOW DO I FIND NEW NFT PROJECTS?**  
* I use [www.niftyriver.io](www.niftyriver.io) and [www.rarity.tools](http://www.rarity.tools) to find new projects and more, they’re almost like the CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko of NFTs
* I use [www.howrare.is](www.howrare.is) to find out the rarity of my collectibles.
* I use Twitter
* I use Discord

If you’re new to using these tools, you could just do YouTube research on how to use them.

It's quite easy to find NFT projects, just use the **#NFT hashtag on Twitter** and follow Twitter  NFT influencers who talk about NFTs, you’d see on influencers to follow on Sucre’s write-up.

### USING DISCORD
On discord you can also check the shill channels of some NFT projects, people drop a ton of NFT projects there, it's now a burden on you to search through them and do your research.

It is not easy using discord, I don’t like discord because you have a lot of people sending you DMs from unknown or rather mutual servers. Some might even be sending you phishing links that you have won bitcoin and all that.

Discord can be really tiring. I don’t go there that much unless I am expecting a notification or an update, I just go there once in a while to check the announcement channels.

### IN ALL
It is profitable if you follow the hype and if you get a good NFT with a good use-case even when the hype dies down, you might be able to utilize the NFT for whatever purpose it is meant for on the project or its platform.

I made my first huge sale in NFT for 0.5 ETH in July, which was an NFT I had had since 2017, that was part of the capital I started using to invest in and “FLIP” (I still don’t like that word) NFTs.

HOW TO FLIP NFTs FOR PROFITS

Since NFTs are decentralized in nature, they are stored using decentralized storage. The most popular decentralized storage solution is known as [IPFS - Interplanetary Filesystem. ](https://ipfs.io/)


## **How does IPFS work?**

IPFS is a peer-to-peer (p2p) storage network. Content is accessible through peers located anywhere in the world, that might relay information, store it, or do both. IPFS knows how to find what you ask for using its content address rather than its location. 
## .

***There are three fundamental principles to understanding IPFS:***

1. Unique identification via content addressing
2. Content linking via directed acyclic graphs (DAGs)
3. Content discovery via distributed hash tables (DHTs)

These three principles build upon each other to enable the IPFS ecosystem.


## 1. **Content Addressing:**

IPFS uses _content addressing_ to identify content by what's in it rather than by where it's located. By contrast, every piece of content that uses the IPFS protocol has a _[content identifier](https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/content-addressing/)_ or CID, that is its _hash_. The hash is unique to the content that it came from, even though it may look short compared to the original content.


IPFS follows particular data-structure preferences and conventions. The IPFS protocol uses those conventions and IPLD(Interplanetary Linked Data) to get from raw content to an IPFS address that uniquely identifies content on the IPFS network.

 

## 2. **Directed Acyclic Graphs:**

IPFS and many other distributed systems take advantage of a data structure called [directed acyclic graphs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed_acyclic_graph), or DAGs. Specifically, they use _Merkle DAGs_, which are DAGs where each node has a unique identifier that is a hash of the node's contents. 


 IPFS lets you give CIDs to content and link that content together in a Merkle DAG.

 

## 3. **Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs):**

To find which peers are hosting the content you're after (_discovery_), IPFS uses a [distributed hash table](https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/dht/) or DHT. A hash table is a database of keys to values. A _distributed_ hash table is one where the table is split across all the peers in a distributed network. To find content, you ask these peers. 


There are [other content replication protocols under discussion ](https://github.com/ipfs/camp/blob/master/DEEP_DIVES/24-replication-protocol.md)as well, the most developed of which is _[Graphsync](https://github.com/ipld/specs/blob/master/block-layer/graphsync/graphsync.md)_. There's also a proposal under discussion to [extend the Bitswap protocol](https://github.com/ipfs/go-bitswap/issues/186) to add functionality around requests and responses. 


There are several pinning and IPFS hosting services like Pinata, Textile.io, Ceramic, Arweave, etc. which are quite popular and also offer free storage up to some extent.

## **OWNERSHIP AND VERIFICATION** 
If anyone can take a screenshot of a digital representation of art, then why would anyone want to own an NFT?

The question is already answered in the question, **OWNERSHIP**.

If you took a picture of art in the museum, owning the digital copy of the art on your device as a picture doesn’t make it yours. These tokens have unique identifiers on the blockchain that makes them non-fungible and easy to identify and prove ownership.

The next reason is **VERIFICATION**, the blockchain gives us the ability to know the existence of an NFT, who’s holding it, how many were minted, what it represents, etc. 

This way, you can verify the **_authenticity,_** **_scarcity,_** and **_ownership_** of an NFT

This makes it possible for NFT’s to digitally represent a physical real-life asset.

If a creator wanted to traditionally sell their works, they sell it at a once-off price and if that artwork gets resold, the original creator doesn’t earn any commission on that resale.

So if I made the purchase of someone’s art at 1BNB today, and maybe in a few months the artist becomes internationally recognized, the value of that NFT would have increased to maybe 2BNB, so if I sell that NFT at 2BNB, the original artist gets a certain % in BNB as Royalties depending on what they keyed in.

You don’t get this in traditional art sales, and what’s more, the artist gets to track his progress and value.

You’ve heard me say, the future of NFTs is UTILITY!!! but it’s a lot deeper than that.

Utility in this context is the ability of an NFT to be used beyond being a store of value but usability substantially as a medium of exchange for a service, product, or access.

*Mr. Wonders will elaborate more in the next section.*


## WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF NFTS?

Every day we hear about a new collectible drop, the cryptocurrencies and blockchain space is a crazy world and NFTs have become part of that craze.

But NFTs could become something far more widely used than in just art.

As Revolution takes place in every aspect of life including technology, NFTs could provide more efficient ways of conducting business. 

Transactions can potentially happen more quickly and easily. Blockchain also keeps a record of all the transactions connected to the NFT and the property it represents. For example, in art sales, NFTs could represent the provenance of something going back to the creator.

Furthermore, NFTs can include what are called smart contracts, or code elements that can automatically take actions under certain conditions. The concept is of an automated and self-enforcing set of rules that can’t be ignored or skipped. 

In the future, NFT use cases will only continue to multiply, and may even be linked to everyday activities such as ticket sales, proof of attendance, and battling fraud.

While we may be some years away from the hype cycles cooling off, steady organic growth can be expected in the medium-term as more and more stakeholders begin to appreciate the value and multifarious applications of NFTs. Once this happens, digital tokens have the potential to be linked to any unique, tangible, and intangible asset – including endangered species and space assets.


## **How exactly can NFTs be used to preserve capital?**


1. People could use NFTs **as synthetic tokens** and **attach NFTs to real-life assets,** products, or services.
2. NFTs promise a way to connect with their audiences directly with the potential to** revolutionize in-game monetization.**
3. **Personal identity management** is one area in which NFTs can shine, if we can have avatars we can have IDs.

The most straightforward use case of NFTs in decentralized finance is obtaining loans against valuable digital assets without selling them.

**Healthcare:**
Genetic testing facilities have been sharing the DNA of humans with big pharma companies to cut years off drug research. However, this has often raised concerns as to how these companies sell the most personal data for huge profits without passing any benefits to patients.

**Real estate:**
Since there has only been one successful real estate transaction that utilized an NFT, and it was in Ukraine, it remains to be seen how well this technology can be adapted to meet the variable needs of this kind of real-world deal on a global scale.

The real-world utility would soon be translated into the same sort of current landscape of NFTs, As NFTs gain momentum, existing businesses will want to figure out ways to either expand into NFTs or convert current products or benefit programs into NFTs.

Reputation and scarcity driven value, work well for digital art and collectibles, but this is a relative niche audience

The highest level of utility for an NFT is where an owner of an NFT is entitled to certain benefits or opportunities as a result of his or her ownership.

### 1. ENTERTAINMENT:

The best thing about NFTs is that the middlemen are cut out and anybody with an internet connection, anywhere in the world can access an NFT, with the right programming. In entertainment, producers can seize the opportunity to raise money for new productions by selling digital collectibles (such as artwork or sections of the film’s score), to publicize the release of a movie or music to boost awareness of an issue.

### 2. SPORTS: TICKET AUTHENTICATION:

NFTs offer a new monetization model that benefits athletes and their fans even more than advertising or sponsorship. It is also a new way to connect with fans and provide them with a unique experience such as giving them a chance to buy one-of-a-kind items, photos from personal archives, and even a ticket to an in-person meeting. Fans can also see NFTs as a form of investment: they can resell tokens and earn money from them. For some, having a unique NFT backed by a real item is a joy and an unforgettable emotional experience as well. 

What defines the collectible card business, for example, is the physical scarcity of cards. The idea of scarcity combined with authenticity is what attracts fans the most and helps athletes get closer to them.

Moreover, launching an NFT project is another marketing opportunity for leagues and athletes. Just like they sell official league- and team-related merchandise, they can also create NFTs and treat this as another kind of e-commerce only with a lot more potential applications.

### 3. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: PATENT MARKETPLACE

The advantage of NFTs over other forms of proof is that once an NFT is purchased from a verified seller, it is easy to track the chain of ownership and the emergence of NFTs is particularly interesting when it comes to intellectual property law because IP law often protects intangible assets, such as an invention (patent law), a song (copyright law), or a logo (trademark law).

As with any new application, clients involved in non-fungible tokens and blockchain technology, including companies, creators, and artists, should seek legal counsel to ensure their intellectual property rights are preserved and properly enforced. Intellectual property attorneys can assist companies in identifying protectable content and subject matter, recommending best practices and proper safeguards to protect works from improper exploitation.

NFTs can be used as proof of travel. NFTs can present an opportunity for travelers to prove they have done a particular thing. Tourists could use NFTs to aid wildlife conservation.

NFTs use cases have been recognized in terms of digital identity so it will work well.

In addition to human identity and qualification certification, NFTs can be used to develop certificates of authenticity or ownership for any digital or physical object.

NFT art and gaming items use digital certificates to authenticate rare online assets and track their movements. This concept, a novelty for most people, has seen an influx of activity from artists and gamers who have learned to utilize the technology to their advantage.

### 8. NFTS IN LIVE EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES

NFTs could be used to make event ticketing more secure. Counterfeit tickets are a large issue and since NFT ownership is verifiable on a blockchain, the authenticity of an NFT ticket is always guaranteed and current online ticket marketplaces also charge high fees to facilitate trades, which could be removed completely with a decentralized NFT ticket market. People could buy directly from each other, while still knowing they were getting a real ticket.

### So what does it mean for something to be Non-Fungible?

Fungibility means two or more of one thing are all alike, for example, a $1 note is exactly the same as another $1 note, 1 BTC has the same components as any other 1 BTC on the bitcoin blockchain and therefore can be interchangeable and divisible.

Your clothes, cars, land, friends, etc, are not fungible, they can’t be interchanged and possess the exact same qualities, especially because of the issue of ownership. If I lent someone a red dress, they can’t return another red dress to me, they have to return that exact red dress with all the features it possesses, the feature of my ownership included. I own it, and I want that exact dress I own.

If I wanted to give out that red dress as a gift, I’d have to forfeit my ownership to it, I can’t divide my dress into pieces and give someone else as a gift, if I wanted them to have it, I'd have to give it to them, whole. 


NFTs are indivisible *(well at least for now because there are platforms where they can be divisible).* 



## QLIP's DEFINITION OF NFTs


Non Fungible Tokens are simply data like:
1. Audio
2. Text
3. Pictures
4. Videos 
These are data are stored on the blockchain that is unique and indivisible but possessing intrinsic and or aesthetic values.
NFTs make it possible for art and any data to be tokenized, therefore any data possessing intrinsic and attributed aesthetic value can be tokenized.

Intrinsic value means that an NFT gives direct access or utility to the holder.
Attributed aesthetic value is basically the emotional attachment the NFT holder gives to an NFT because of the artist, brand story, or experience behind it.



## **THE TECH EXPLANATION OF NFTS**

Let’s approach from a more tech-savvy perspective.

### Why are NFTs called tokens?

Tokens are cryptocurrencies created on an already existing blockchain, they don’t have their own blockchain, whereas Crypto Currencies or (like [Sorochukwu](https://twitter.com/EbereSorochukwu) says), Coins have their own blockchain.

For example, BNB isn’t a Token, it is a Coin because it is built on its own blockchain and the fees for interacting with that blockchain are charged in BNB.

$QLP on the other hand is a token built on Binance Smart Chain.

This doesn’t mean crypto tokens are less valuable or will do badly in the market, they just don’t have their own blockchain. 

> The reason NFTs are called tokens is that they are a version of Cryptocurrencies existing on an already existing blockchain.

Any token can be created on the blockchain and be given value if it has a great community and great use cases behind it, Tokens created are simply lines of codes with instructions on the blockchain that govern its basic features.
NFTs are the same thing, except that they contain DATA!

A Non-Fungible Token is a special type of cryptographic token which represents something unique; NFTs are thus not mutually interchangeable, they are scarce digital assets connected to a token and put up on the blockchain;

### NFTs = Digital Asset + Token stored on a blockchain.

Non-fungible tokens are rare unique digital assets that are connected to digital certificates (Tokens) and stored on the blockchain.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are unique digital items with blockchain-managed ownership.

*Fungibility* refers to the property of an asset whose individual units are interchangeable and essentially indistinguishable from each other e.g Naira notes, Dollar notes, Bitcoin, Ethereum.




## **FEATURES, STANDARDS & TYPE OF NFTS**

### FEATURES OF NFTs

**Uniqueness:** Each Non-Fungible token contains metadata specific to that particular token, this metadata describes what makes this asset different from others in the same collection as itself and others, the metadata is a permanent and unalterable detailing information about the NFT.

**Guaranteed Ownership:** Non-Fungible tokens bring full assurance of ownership to collectors as the information and provenance of the asset is stored on the blockchain and can be easily queried to verify.

**Provenance:** Non-Fungible tokens bring a new dimension to provenance as individuals are able to query the full history of an NFT from its creation to its current owner alongside, time of creation, the material used in the creation, information about the creator, and more.

**Rarity:** Non-fungible tokens are designed to be of limited supply due to their specific and detailed nature. This construct in the design brings about demand as more individuals are trying to own a limited-edition asset.

**Programmability:** Non-Fungible tokens enable a wide range of programming thereby giving their creator different avenues to experiment and set up complex mechanics like forging, crafting, redeeming, random generation, and more.

**Interoperability:** Non-Fungible tokens standards allow non-fungible tokens to move easily across multiple ecosystems thereby opening new means of utility and trading which is made possible through clear, consistent, reliable, and “permissioned” API for reading and writing data.


### STANDARDS OF NFTs

Standards are specifications in which non-fungible tokens are created as they give developers the guarantee of their assets to act in specific ways alongside describing exactly how to interact with the basic functionality of the asset.

Here is a list of Non-fungible token standards across some blockchains;

**Binance Smart Chain:** The non-fungible token standard on the Binance Smart Chain blockchain includes – BEP 721, and BEP 1155.

**Ethereum:** The non-fungible token standard on the Ethereum blockchain includes – ERC 721, ERC 1155, and ERC 998.

**Tezos:** The non-fungible token standard on the Tezos blockchain include – FA2 (TZIP-12)

**Near:** The non-fungible token standard on the Near Blockchain includes – NEP-4 and NEP-171.


### TYPES OF NFTs

**Fully Centralized:** These are NFTs that don’t have their information or metadata and assets stored on a public blockchain where individuals can query and see transaction history, total supply, etc. An example of this type of NFT is the NBA Top Shots.

**Pointers:**This type of NFT has its certificate of provenance stored on a public blockchain but with its asset stored on either a public server or a decentralized server.

**Fully On Chain:** This type of NFT has its certificate of provenance and asset stored on the blockchain.

## **INTRODUCTION**


Remember when I said that the NFT market had 2 faces like a coin? Yeah, I didn’t mention that every market has a distribution channel like middlemen, like in marketing you have producers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers.

The middlemen are the wholesalers and consumers, yeah! The same kind of structure exists in the NFT market, the only difference is, it’s a free for all kinda market (I ber COD players understand this...lol)

Anyone with the funds and with information can position themselves to be either wholesalers or retailers.

In the NFT market, it’s being either a primary market player or a secondary market player.

Anyone in any market can profit if they play their cards right.

Just like you trade coins in various exchanges, you can trade NFTs and make profits by buying low and selling high.

So in this chapter, we’d be talking about what collectors do to, identify, buy and sell NFTs for profits, the Americans call this Flipping.   

## **HERE’S A STORY ON HOW I RIPPED MYSELF OFF**

I remember one of the platforms I researched when I started my NFT journey was NBA TopShots. I kept hearing Pranksy talk about it on Twitter and the top funds he was putting into buying rare packs, so as usual I got curious and created my [NBA TopShot account](https://nbatopshot.com/user/@ItsKG).

And I started buying some NFTs, they were called “moments” each pack had 5 moments with random rarities, and I was lucky enough to get a pack with one LE - Limited Edition Moment, I remember buying that pack for about $12 I guess.

That LE Moment was Luka, and I put it up for sale at a price of $100, then shared the link on discord, and someone bought it in less than a minute. I was ecstatic!!

I thought I was becoming an amazing collector until, I found out what the floor price was for that moment - $300….. This guy bought my Luca for $100 and immediately put it up for sale for $300+ and it sold within minutes because it’s on record, you can see the transaction history, mehhhhn was I mad at myself….lol. Damn it was painful! I felt bad for a while, then bought a cheaper Luca out of spite.

How did I find out!

Someone in the discord channel told me I had sold it too cheap, said someone flipped on me and showed me how to find out the value of my moments by checking the floor price, I think you can still see my transaction history if you check my profile.


### MY LESSONS?

1. Get to know the basics of the NFT project first, before trading.
2. Engage the community, ask questions, don’t be shy.
3. Find out the Rarity levels of an NFT, I call them **_“CURE L”_** from the bottom up.
* Legendary
* Epic
* Rare
* Uncommon
* Common

The most valuable are the legendary packs and the least valuable are the common packs, every NFT project has a guide that shows you the Rarity Levels of their packs, they might not call it CUREL but they will have a guide if they’re serious about being relevant in the secondary market.

HOW TO NFT; FOR COLLECTORS

***Just like a coin has two sides, every market has 2 sides;***

* The _buyers_ and the _sellers_
* The _producers_ and the _consumers_
* The _supply_ and the _demand_ ….. and so on and so forth

But in this NFT space, I call those two sides **“The Creators and The Collectors”**


## The Creators can be;
* Various types of Artists, Brands, or individuals (from music to actors to hyperrealists and more)
* Fashion Brands
* Public Figures
* Film/Media houses
* Comedians
* Influencers etc.
* Tertiary institutions etc

## The Collectors can be;
* Fans
* Brand Loyalists
* Customers
* Individuals
* Traders (don’t forget this is a market too)
 

## Who is a creator?

An NFT Creator is one who provides value through NFTs.

Going by the examples posted in the introduction, you can see that NFT creators can exist in any industry, as long as they can provide value through NFTs.

There are 2 main categories of NFT Creators;

* Mainstream Artists or creators
* Individual Artists or creators

## Mainstream Artists/creators

These are Artists, Brands or Individuals who have made a name in their industry and are globally known, they’ve got the followers, the hype, the attention of the media, the international awards, etc.

In the African Music industry setting, mainstream artists would be the top record labels like Mavin, top artists like the BurnaBoys, the Tiwa Savages, the Wizkids, the Olamides, the Davidos etc.

In the Literary space, they would be the Wole Soyinkas, The Chimamamndas, The Achebe’s, The Camera Laye’s, The Ngugi wa Thiong’os, etc.

And you can go on to identify mainstream artists in other sectors and industries, basically, if these guys made an NFT drop, it would make the news, because of who they are, period!

Most works of Mainstream Artists sell because of;



1. Sentimental value from fans, brand loyalists, etc and
2. Traders’ expectation
3. And another thing that can make them skyrocket that we aren’t yet seeing is utility.

Most of the NFTs that are dropped by some mainstream artists today, don’t live beyond their drop, and that’s because there’s no real-life off-chain utility to them.

The ones that do have trading activities, have them because of a major event happening in the artist’s career or in their brand.

As a mainstream artist or brand, releasing an NFT of yourself is like tokenizing a piece of you on the blockchain that has a direct link to your real-life activities, where those activities can determine if the price of your NFT goes up or skyrockets.

But these are the kind of conversions we have with Mainstream artists in private to determine their NFT drops and utility strategy.

But if you’re a mainstream artist or creator considering getting into NFTs, understand that you don’t need to spend any extra or more than you’re already doing now for your brand.

Independent artists or creators aren’t yet internationally recognized on a large scale, they’re excellent artists/creators and are probably even more crafted than some mainstream artists/creators, but haven’t yet gained popularity across borders.

The activities for Mainstream Artist/Creators are peculiar to their brand and function, for Independent Artists/Creators it’s a bit different, there are peculiarities that exist but I’d break them down into 5 simple steps.

Not to burst your bubble though, but thinking like that, is like a musician or visual artist, wanting to make their career a “get-rich-quick” shortcut to earning some passive income.

The first key to excelling in the NFT industry is looking at your NFT journey as a **career.**

Think of your NFT journey like how Netflix upgraded its services with the internet. In the ’90s, they rented movies manually and with postal service too. But when the internet came, they took advantage of it, early! ## 1. PRE-MINTING ACTIVITIES

As the subtitle suggests, Pre-Minting activities are activities you carry out before creating your NFT. Just like as a music artist, before releasing an album, you structure it, you decide, the genres, the producers who would work on them, which singles to promote, etc.

You have to consider these 4 key factors before minting your NFT;


1. Artistry
2. Price
3. Utility


### ARTISTRY

Artistry refers to the artist and the art they’re putting out, the key to making artistry work is **being intentional.** Let’s take photography as an example.

If a photographer wants to have their work minted on QLIP; these are the ideas and steps they should consider.


### The artists - Who are you and are you branding?

You’ll need to ask these questions because they help determine the value of your NFTs in the long run. Why are you doing photography, what’s your style of photography? Have you identified what makes you different?

If you have the answers to these questions, then the next question is:
**are you branding your work?**

Audiences follow a brand, it’s why artists have fans and followers.


### The NFT - How will your NFT look?

How many will be minted? Will these first mint have a central theme? How much will they be valued? What will be the features?

So if we’re looking at photography, you’d be asking questions like: 

What photography series will these NFTs be centered on?

What will they be called? 

How scarce will they be?

**Closure - Behind the scenes**

Closure is the documented process following an NFT that gives the art aficionados and your fans an insight into how your NFT was created. It adds to the value of your work.

After giving your NFT a name, a series, and every other essential, you should or could give the process a story, that’s how the artistry gets appreciated. Say you were creating a drop for an NFT the process creation serves as quality marketing and building anticipation and awareness leading to the drop.


In summary;

_If a photographer wants to create NFTs of their work, they need to do it intentionally and document their creative process._

## PRICING

Here’s is an aspect that doesn’t incur cost to implement, the only cost here is *“Self Awareness”*

You have to evaluate yourself, notice I didn’t say your art, I said *“yourself”* as an artist, where do you think you are at now, at this point of your career?

That should determine how your prices are set, **it’s more of the artist than the art**.

Honestly, we’ve seen NFT art with not very aesthetic values sell for a lot more than some others that were more aesthetic.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, the important thing is, who’s behind the beauty. 

The aesthetics of your NFT are created the way they are because of you the artist, so, you-- the artist, determine the price.

So it’s not about aesthetics, it’s about you.

### NOW THAT BEING SAID.....

**Be realistic** in setting the prices to your NFTs, let them reflect your current state of career and not your future expectations.

Don't go setting your NFTs at 100BNB, 10BNB, or more when you can't match it;

To back this up.

Don't get carried away with the new Collectible drops that you see today gaining increased floor prices almost immediately.

**HERE'S A LITTLE HINT**

Those projects have a Level 1 community of ETH and NFT holders/investors, who buy back the NFTs within themselves to push up the floor prices, to attract external (level 2) investors and NFT aficionados, and when the hype sets in, is where they actually make their profits in the first stage of the secondary market.

That's the reason for the Twitter updates, discord activities, etc.

So don't get carried away with the prices of other NFT projects and artists, set your price according to your level of self-awareness.

Ask yourself if you would buy your work (not the aesthetics) for that amount you're imputing.


 

## **2. UTILITY CREATION**

You’ve probably heard me use the term in some of my tweets about utility for NFTs;



1. Real-life utility
2. Off-chain utility

**“Real-life”** utility refers to an NFT being useful beyond display in a wallet, having real-life uses (that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not digital), a lot of our real-life interactions are with the virtual world, our games, online events, information downloads, etc. So real-life utility for an NFT could be a utility like;



* Gaming
* DeFi Access
* Access to a virtual event
* Access to data like a document, 

**“Off-Chain”** utility refers to an NFT being used off the blockchain to access physical products or tangible services and here’s where brands, both big and small can come to play. 

If you’re a business person or a founder who takes your brand seriously, then it is reflected in the designs and kind of post you make on your social media.

I usually say, if you’re already making posts on Instagram, then you can monetize those contents as NFTs with little cost, all you have to do is add utility to them, it’s like having value represented on 2 platforms.

**Off-chain utility for an NFT can be;**

* Connecting and NFT to a brand’s T-shirts or a clothing design
* Access to a music concert or comedy show
* Access to a Movie premiere 
* Redeemable certificates for courses and educational activities etc.
* Vouchers, coupons, etc to a service

There are many that I didn’t mention here, but you can figure them out with respect to your market and your service or products.

This is something that a lot of NFT artists and brands aren’t yet looking into.

In doing your NFT drops, you'd attract people new to the NFT space, and also new to your brand.

So you can't just come at them with NFT sales, you can do a little giveaway to existing customers and potential customers, they're called "Airdrops" in the crypto space

You can have a collectible project and release 2 series, or even make the 1st entirely different from the next with the aim of attracting users.

At the second drop, you can focus on sales, and there's where you add utility to the next drops.

**Community & Secondary Markets**

Your community is a mix of your customers, social media followers, and personal contacts.

And what drives the Community is your product or service.

Because you have a thriving community of repeat customers and a social media space, your NFTs can exist in and live in the secondary markets.

That means they can be actively traded because there's an existing demand for them.

2 things that can drive demand in NFTs are Community and Utility.

Say your photography brand or fashion brand just started and you guys are releasing your NFTs. If you add a utility that connects your NFTs with your products, that means that, as your fashion brand becomes widely accepted in your space, the value of that NFT begins to increase and exchange hands.

And as that happens, you receive royalties. When you make an NFT drop, it is no longer yours, it is in the hands of the consumers, so the only way you can earn is when they resell and that way you get royalties, and we have the royalties feature keyed in on QLIP for artists…. Twitter is the HQ of Crypto Social Media, and where you should launch from, Instagram and Facebook aren’t as engaging with NFT content as Twitter is at the moment, but you can use them to augment your social media activities.


* Use #NFTs on Twitter, also go through the NFT #s to engage and connect.

* Follow NFT creators and NFT collectors

*Do a #NFT challenge that involves others. If you check out this [tweet by QLIP](https://twitter.com/Qlip_it/status/1411722419421732864?s=19) you will find that one of the ways I connected with the NFT space was through my #30daysofNFT challenge.

### Shill your art
Shilling is basically posting links to your art content in relevant tweet posts. There are posts by #NFTcollectors and influencers asking for new artists to post links to their art in the comment section.

Some post verbatim “shill me your art” lol.

Some others say things like “Looking to buy new NFTs, post links to your art and I’ll take a look”

This is one of the ways to bring attention to your work and also strengthen and reward the commitment of your followers.
### Strategic Collaborations - With NFT artists

Just as music people do features, you can do the same in the NFT industry. It’s one of the things we looked at which made us create the NFT COLLAB section on the QLIP Platform which will be live in our next upgrade.

As an independent artist or a photographer, you can collaborate with a music NFT artist, or a mainstream artist to have them as your models for your shots, etc. You get the picture, right?
